Liam is a Chartered (UK) and European Patent Attorney specialising in patent matters relating to a wide range of chemical and life science technologies, and has particular expertise in the fields of pharmaceuticals, therapeutics, diagnostics, medical and surgical devices, and formulation chemistry.
Liam advises clients of all sizes ranging from small start-up companies developing early stage technologies, to universities, to multi-national corporations. Liam assists these entities in developing and growing their IP portfolio, and additionally brings expertise in providing IP audits to assist in companies in becoming ‘investment ready’. His day-to-day practice includes drafting new patent applications, alongside worldwide prosecution matters. Liam has significant experience in carrying out ‘Freedom to Operate’ projects to advise clients on infringement matters. Liam additionally assists an array of clients in opposing and defending patents before the European Patent Office and Boards of Appeal, and more recently has assisted with revocation and infringement matters before the Unitary Patent Court (UPC).
Liam has a keen interest in all technologies at the chemistry-biology interface, which is reflected in his academic background and the variety of clients he advises. Liam graduated from the University of Oxford in 2012 with a Master of Chemistry degree, and remained at the University of Oxford to study for a doctorate in Radiation Oncology and Chemistry, from which he graduated in 2016. His research focused on the development of bio-reductive prodrugs to concurrently image and treat hypoxic tumours, with the objective of providing real time imaging of tumour volume shrinkage as treatment progresses. He joined Marks & Clerk’s Cambridge office in 2016, and moved to the Manchester office in 2017.
