As the Marks & Clerk team head off to Atlanta for the start of the International Trademark Association (INTA) 2024 Annual Meeting, we caught up with Associate Erik Rouk who gave us his thoughts on what makes INTA such a great event to attend...
So, what is so great about INTA?
The coming together of so many colleagues from different parts of the world who all share a passion for trade marks and IP in general. INTA is a great opportunity to catch up and exchange ideas with contacts that may frequent your e-mail inbox but you rarely get to see in person. Even though we have technology that allows us to do video conferences, there is definitely added value to being able to meet your peers in person. It is also great for making new contacts and you definitely feel like you are part of a big community that’s come to town for the week. Going through multiple meetings each day can be intense but it is without a doubt extremely rewarding!
What makes INTA different to other events?
The scale, size, and intensity! It has traditionally been the biggest annual event for the trade mark attorney profession but over the years it has expanded to include more other IP and legal professionals, corporate attendees and industry leaders. With the official programme, various committee and associate meetings, and receptions, there is so much to do and experience. It is a truly global event which attracts consistent attendance from participants and allows you to build and maintain strong connections with colleagues from around the world. There is no other event in our profession that has the same kind of reach and draw as INTA.
What is your favourite INTA memory?
Each INTA has its own character and creates its own memories! It’s difficult to choose one favourite memory. If I really had to narrow it down, it would probably be the morning run from my first INTA in Washington DC. Although I do love my morning sleep, there was something special about catching up with colleagues early in the morning and going for a run past iconic landmarks at such an impressive location! To solidify that experience, the evening was topped off by meetings and a reception at offices with a direct view of the White House. It was great doing an activity with colleagues early in the day and then bumping into them in a different setting in the evening.
