Elliot handles patent matters in the materials science and chemistry sectors, with an emphasis on green and renewable technologies, polymeric materials, industrial chemistry, and medical and diagnostic devices. He has experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in both the UK and Europe, as well as co-ordinating prosecution abroad. He is also regularly involved in opposing patents before the European Patent Office and helping clients with freedom-to-operate issues.
Elliot entered the patent profession in 2019 and qualified as both a Chartered Patent Attorney (UK) and European Patent Attorney in 2023. During his European Qualifying Examinations his answer to the opposition paper was selected as the best answer in English and was published anonymously on the EQE website. He has a first class MSci degree in Chemistry with Molecular Physics from Imperial College London, where his final year project focused on solar water splitting, and a PhD from the University of Sheffield, where he used X-ray diffraction techniques to study metal-organic frameworks during CO2 adsorption. He has also conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Sheffield and University of Liverpool and has co-authored academic papers on carbon capture materials, lithium battery electrolyte materials, co-crystal formation, solid-state interactions and catalysis.
