Tom is a Chartered Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney, and handles patent matters in the electronics and software fields. His areas of particular technical expertise include processor architecture, machine learning, telecommunications, and network interface controllers.
Tom has drafted and prosecuted large numbers of high-tech patent applications for both SMEs and large established businesses. Much of his work has an international focus, with his drafting and portfolio management taking into consideration the distinct requirements of different jurisdictions. Tom has particular knowledge and experience of US patent law and prosecution. In recent years, he played a key role in designing and building the patent portfolio of one of the UK’s largest start-ups, a company developing processors for machine learning.
In addition to his experience in drafting patent applications, Tom has experience successfully representing clients at oral proceedings before the European Patent Office (EPO), including in both opposition proceedings and examination proceedings.
Tom has worked in intellectual property since 2013 after graduating from the University of Nottingham with a first class honours degree in Physics. Tom joined Marks & Clerk in 2023, having previously worked for another IP firm.
