Emma is a Chartered (UK) and European Patent Attorney and she handles the preparation, filing and prosecution of patent applications worldwide in a range of chemical fields. Emma has particular experience in handling patent applications relating to polymers, catalysts, battery materials, oil & gas technology, pharmaceuticals, nutritional formulations and sustainable packaging. Emma has experience of Opposition and Appeal proceedings at the European Patent Office, and she has also worked on a number of freedom-to-operate opinions for her clients.
Emma works with start-up companies and universities in addition to large companies and during her time at Marks & Clerk Emma has undertaken several secondments. Emma is therefore able to provide clients with a rare perspective which is the result of working in a private practice role and also in-house, meaning Emma is able to bring a high degree of commercial awareness and understanding to her work, to the benefit of her clients.
Emma joined Marks & Clerk after completing a DPhil in Organic Chemistry at the University of Oxford, under the supervision of Professor Steve Davies. Her research focused on the asymmetric synthesis of amino polyol-containing compounds including amino sugars, imino sugars and complex natural product fragments. She has previously also obtained a First Class MChem degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford.
