David practises in patent matters in three main areas: healthcare, advanced materials, and food technology. David drafts, files and prosecutes patent applications worldwide, advises on freedom to operate, and is experienced in opposition and appeal matters at the European Patent Office, litigation in the UK, and supplementary protection certificates (SPCs) in the UK, EU and beyond.

In the healthcare sector, David routinely advises on inventions relating to new chemical entities and formulations, new indications for existing medicines, and medical devices. David has particular experience in antiviral medicines and wearables.

David is experienced in handling patents in the advanced materials sector, in particular the material processing of nanomaterials and polymers, as well as optoelectronic devices such as organic and inorganic LED devices and solar cells.

In the food technology sector, David regularly drafts and prosecutes patent applications relating to novel foods and ingredients and improvements in food processing.

Before joining Marks & Clerk, David received his Masters in Chemistry from Durham University for his research into activity-based probes for the discovery of new druggable targets in neglected tropical diseases.
