Giles is a Chartered UK Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney specialising in chemistry, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering. He particularly enjoys working at the interface of chemistry and engineering, and has a great deal of experience working with a range of clients from start-ups to SMEs to global businesses as well as in-house.
He has particular experience in the energy sector, including oil and gas, nuclear power, fuel cells, batteries, battery materials, and oilfield chemicals. He is very interested in CCUS and the circular economy of hydrocarbons. He also has a great deal of experience in large-scale chemical processing, water treatment technology, metal casting, mining technologies, pumps, turbochargers, internal combustion engines, jet engines, sub-sea technologies, tools, as well as hi-tech materials, such as quantum dots, polymers, alloys, and catalysts. He has previously worked in-house handling an international patent portfolio of a global chemicals company.
Giles’ practice includes the drafting and prosecution of patent applications around the world as well as advising in relation to validity and infringement matters. Giles has handled various opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO.
Giles is also a Chartered UK Trade Mark Attorney and was a European Trade Mark Attorney for many years.
Giles graduated from the University of York with a BSc in Chemistry and in his final year worked on the elucidation of the 3D structure of mutated human insulin-like growth factor using X-ray crystallography. Giles also has an MSc in Medicinal Chemistry.
