Philip is a UK and European Patent Attorney who specialises in protecting inventions in all fields of engineering. His technical experience includes software, telecommunications, medical devices, electronics, mechanical engineering and manufacturing.
Philip’s practice focuses on drafting and prosecuting patent applications. He has expertise in managing patent portfolios, conducting due diligence investigations, drafting opinions on patent infringement and validity, and advising on registered designs. He also has significant experience in opposition and appeal proceedings at the European Patent Office, with a high success rate in oppositions.
Before joining Marks & Clerk in 2018, Philip was a partner in the London office of a large U.S. law firm, where he developed a good understanding of U.S. patent law. He is a frequent speaker on intellectual property law, and has spoken at numerous events in Europe, the United States and Asia.
Philip has an MEng degree from Durham University, for which he specialised in electronic engineering. He also has a PhD from Durham University, which was awarded for research in the field of medical devices. More recently, Philip was awarded Certificates in Intellectual Property Litigation and Advocacy from Nottingham Law School, winning the Hogarth Prize for achieving the highest mark by a patent attorney.
Philip is recognised by Intellectual Asset Management’s IAM Patent 1000 as a leading patent professional in the United Kingdom and at the European Patent Office. He has also been recommended by Legal 500 and Who’s Who Legal.
