James has over 30 years' experience working in intellectual property. As a Partner and Patent Attorney, James has extensive experience handling patents in a very wide range of technologies, especially for electronics, mechanical and electro-mechanical inventions. He has particular experience in medical devices, automotive industries, semiconductor technologies and processing equipment, automation and industrial systems, manufacturing machinery and material handling equipment. James has had extensive involvement in Chinese, European, UK and Singaporean patent and design prosecution.

James graduated from Cambridge University in 1989, with a degree in Engineering Science, and obtained a postgraduate diploma in Computer Science in 1990, also from Cambridge University. He entered the patent profession in 1990, working in private practice in London, where he qualified as a UK Chartered Patent Attorney and as a European Patent Attorney. He moved to work in private practice in Singapore in 2000, where he qualified as a Singaporean patent agent before joining Marks & Clerk in 2004) and moving to Beijing.  He became a partner in 2007.  After 20 years experience in Chinese patent prosecution he returned to the UK, to our Oxford office, in 2024.
