Robert is both a patent and a design attorney. He handles mechanical subject matter, and is on our UK business’ engineering, designs, transport and agritech leadership committees.
Robert’s work primarily relates to securing patent and design protection within various mechanical and civil engineering sectors. Some of his areas of expertise include construction, oil and gas, automotive, rail and infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing, medical and surgical equipment, including prosthetics and general healthcare products, and commercial products such as travel goods, toys and packaging.
Robert has substantial patent and design drafting and prosecution experience both for large and small companies and regularly provides advice concerning patent and design filing strategies. He also handles general IP portfolio management and the provision of advice or opinions in relation to patent and design right infringement. In addition, he has considerable experience in representing clients at oral proceedings before the European Patent Office. This includes hearings before Examining Divisions, Opposition Divisions and Boards of Appeal.
Robert graduated from the University of Durham with an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering. He entered the IP profession in 1995, and moved to Marks & Clerk in 2009. Robert joined the M&C partnership in 2010.
A number of his articles about securing intellectual property have been published in national, local and engineering press.
Robert is a very practical person, often found in his workshop mending things, or taking on DIY projects. He enjoys spending time with his family, including time in the countryside on his family farm. He is also passionate about photography, fishing and skiing.
