First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Class 37 & Mark 1 coach.

Firstly, this is a w:en:British Rail Class 37 not a Class 55 Deltic. The Deltics have a characteristic droop to the front end, which this lacks, but also the arrangement of the side grills gives it away that's it's a 37, not a class 40.

Secondly, the coach is a Mk 1 coach, not a Mk2. The Mk2 bodysides have curved ends, whereas with the body profile continues to the end of the coach. I think it must be a BCK too, but I'm not 100%. Dunc| 16:00, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the loco is a class 37 but not that the coach is a mk 1, the mark 1's have a bow shaped side profile which this coach has not got. I belive it is a mk 2 Oxyman 00:59, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

categories and spelling mistakes

[edit]

Hi Simon, I've noticed from your contributions you're a little uncertain about how to do some things here at commons.

  • To add an image to a category, edit the image description page and add [[category:Foo]] at the bottom (where "Foo" is the name of the category you want to add it to). It works the same way as adding an article to a category at Wikipedia.
  • If you want to nominate an image for speedy deletion, for example if you make a spelling error in the name, then add {{db|reason}} to the image description page. If you have uploaded a replacement image it is useful to not this in your reason - e.g. {{db|spelling mistake in name - re-uploaded as [[:image:Foo2.jpg]]}}. The : infront of the image links to the image page rather than inserting the image into the page. Again this is all similar to the way things work at Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, then feel free to leave a message on my talk page here or at the English Wikipedia. Thryduulf 22:18, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spsmiler!

You uploaded the picture mentioned in the headline on Dec 30, 2005. But when did you take it? It doesn't seem to be an actual photo...

Best regards, --L.m.k 15:07, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was taken many years ago, perhaps late 1970's or early 1980's, when I worked near to Broad Street Station, but I do not recall exactly when.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --Orgullomoore 18:01, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This image had to be deleted, as I made a mistake with the file name - there were no trailers in the R stock; the entire train was motored, although only some vehicles had driving cabs.

Image:Central Line platform at Liverpool Street Station.jpg

[edit]

Hi Spsmiler, I edited your photograph Image:Central Line platform at Liverpool Street Station.jpg, and something went wrong while uploading, I don't know what. From the file history now it seems that I am the original uploader, and you and I know this is not true. So I put your name into the picture. If you scroll down to the metadata you will see. Your name is now connected to your photo, even if someone dowloads it. Kind regards, Jan Arkesteijn 15:40, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There was indeed something weird going on with that image. It's now listing you as the only uploader, with no mention of Jan Arkesteijn, and the image dimensions were wrong (presumably they matched your original version and not Jan's edited one). I reuploaded the current version of the image to correct the dimensions and the metadata, which hopefully has fixed it, but it looks like your original version may have been irretrievably lost. If you feel it could've been worth keeping, you may want to consider reuploading it. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 13:05, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Spsmiler!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:London-Bakerloo-Line-Old-Route-Map.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I was wondering if you could add some date information to this photo. It's obviously not recent, but when? -mattbuck (Talk) 13:59, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello - do you know what year this picture was taken? Crookesmoor (talk) 11:38, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is the cat you were looking for I believe. It's not in Category:Buses in Hampshire, but one level up, in Category:Bus transport in Hampshire. That's because it's a transport system (ie the cat can conceivably contain images of the busway/stops without any buses), as opposed to just a category of bus images. As such, it's fine to have Eclipse buses in Category:Buses in Hampshire (note that it is also sub-divided into more specific locations) - just add the Category:Eclipse (Hampshire bus rapid transit) to them as well. In time as it fills up, sub-categories like Category:Eclipse buses in Hampshire/Gosport/Fareham can be created, to be filed under both the location and system tree, although Eclipse is not the system most in need of that yet (see Cambridge for example). Ultra7 (talk) 14:27, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually you had uploaded some non-bus images - I've moved them from the bus cat to the system cat. I've also removed the interior images, as it's not customary to categorise bus interiors by location - it's far more useful to categories them by the system (done) or the manufacturer (to be done).
