First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

PD back to an image

[edit]

Hi Mayhem, I changed Image:Milo djukanovic.jpg back to PD because I see no reason why it should be fair use. Please correct me when I missed something. -guety 01:44, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Re:Apes again

[edit]

Hi, I've seen you using Category:Old World monkeys. Isn't that a bit redundant to Category:Cercopithecidae? --Mayhem 03:49, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Yes, technically it is very redundant. But I would like to make the images accesible to people that aren't familiar with scientific names. (I've mostly been working with galleries such as Monkeys and Prosimians) The ability to create multiple category schemes works very well for this, it just hasn't been used consitantly yet.
Oh, and thank you so much for asking instead of just deleting. Let me know if you still don't think it makes sense. LeaMaimone 04:01, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
How is it the least accessible? And what would you suggest otherwise? I've debated using this category for a while and perhaps its not the best idea, but categorization was designed to use more than one system. For example, Category:Plantae. Even if it's a bit chaotic still, it is using common and scientific schemes (Category:Plantae by family). Anyway, I just started using that category. I'll hold off on adding more until I get some more opinions on this. LeaMaimone 04:17, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Well, I see you don't agree with my categorization of articles either. But by placing Macaca in Category:Macaca and Category:Cercopithecinae I am actually following a fairly standard practice. (See: w:Wikipedia:Categorization) I realize all the wikipedia guidlines don't work here with images, but this was again an attempt at making images easier to find. It really frustrates me to have to trail through underpopulated categories to find a single image and if the apropriate articles are listed under a broader category this allows use of a TOC. Thus, Macaca in the most specific category it applies to and a more general one.

I just saw your last post, and I'm not sure I understand what you mean by treating a synonym as a synonym. - LeaMaimone 04:34, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Please STOP taking the Category:Berlin link out of image description pages. You already caused a lot of damage. There is nothing wrong in adding Category:Architecture of Germany or other, but please don't remove the city catgegory. Thank you. --Magadan  ?! 15:12, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You removed dozens of category links. The category is almost empty now. --Magadan  ?! 15:50, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
And that means ...? --Mayhem 15:51, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Hi Mayhem, you removed not only the Category:Berlin but also all other categories in many pictures. Why? Is there a special reason? Greetings --Torinberl 22:47, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I felt that the categorization given was often too broad and tried to narrow it down. Just an example: Image:Gewaechshaus Botanischer Garten Berlin.jpg is now on 3 gallery pages and the categories are no longer needed. If there are cases where you disagree please let me know. --Mayhem 07:30, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
We did (above). The sense of Categories has nothing to do with listing pictures on gallery pages, so please keep the categorizations on the image pages. Thank you. --Magadan  ?! 12:59, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

District of Berlin

[edit]

It should definitly be Category:District of Berlin ... Greetings -- Schorsch 17:35, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Do you mean the plural? Plural names are standard on w:en and on commons. --Mayhem 07:33, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
sounds really strange to mee ... but i can live with that :-) -- Schorsch 07:55, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

My RfA

[edit]

Hi Mayhem, thanks for your comment on my RfA. I hope to learn all there is to know about the policies quickly, so any links you could show me would be much appreciated. I've added quite a few to my user page just today. Cheers, --Erin (talk) 14:14, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I only browsed through a few of your edits and got the impression that you're still in the process of learning how to get things done quickly and effortlessly. I'll gladly keep an eye and provide comments when they are needed. --Mayhem 17:58, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thank you so much for the link to nationalatlas.gov! I'm extremely excited. It's just the kind of data I've been trying to find for months. Here's a flower for you. dbenbenn | talk 00:44, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
